David Abeles on Marrying His Dream Girl and Making Music in MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET

August 25, 2011

After hearing Abeles attack the piano as rockabilly legend Jerry Lee Lewis, it's no surprise to learn he started lessons at age four. "I continued against my will until I was 12," he recalls, "then quit for a year before realizing I really missed it." His musically inclined parents were always supportive of Abeles and his two younger siblings, also performers ("psychiatrists would have a field day with us," he quips), but not overly strict. "My dad was stricter about baseball, once he found out I could play," the actor says.

MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET: A Trip Inside Rock History

August 23, 2011

In the first moments of MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET, you must quickly get adjusted to the fact that this story about four rock n' roll legends is really a story about the record company, Sun Records, that launched their careers. Sure, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis are the first ones to appear on stage; but it's their producer and visionary Sam Phillips who does the talking. And that rock n' roll good time doesn't let up for nearly 100 minutes thereafter.

Needless to say, when I heard about the musical “MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET,” featuring the stories and songs of each of these much loved and adored musical icons, I couldn’t get to the theater fast enough.

First he propped himself between two chairs, like a sprinter waiting for a starting pistol. Then, half-reverently and half-jokingly, he got down on one knee, which was the position he was found in when the real-life Mr. Lewis entered the room.
