Opening of ‘Million Dollar Quartet’ is cause to party

In life, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash didn’t really hang out together, but they did for an entertaining 95 minutes in the musical “Million Dollar Quartet,” at the Citi Emerson Colonial Theatre.

Touring 'Quartet' in perfect harmony

Whew! I just saw "Million Dollar Quartet," and I'm ready to head back.

I didn't expect the touring production, now at The Smith Center, to be such an electrifying evening of theater. For one thing, the storyline sounded too confining: four now-famed musicians (Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis) re-create a historical jam session from 1956. Secondly, what were the chances that a touring production would come up with performers who could even suggest the magic of the legends?

That’s just one lesson learned opening night of the Tony-winning hit musical Million Dollar Quartet, a look at one of the most magical nights in rock and roll history, when four legends-in-the-making descended on Memphis’ Sun Records studio for an impromptu jam session a few weeks before Christmas in 1956.

‘Million Dollar Quartet’ scrapes the marrow of early rock for a bone-shakin’ good time.

Geeky rock critics everywhere rage over Greil Marcus’ well-known book Mystery Train: Images of America in Rock ‘n’ Roll Music.

In every passionate page, Marcus takes the Elvis naysayers down. He argues that even if the young man born in Tupelo, Miss., never wrote one single song of his own, he nevertheless invented rock ‘n’ roll as we know it the night Sun Records label boss Sam Phillips coached him through a new way of singing "That’s All Right." The naysayers sneered back, giving Arthur Crudup, the man who actually wrote the song, due credit.

Million Dollar Quartet delivers a foot-stomping good time

Back in 1956, a couple weeks before Christmas, four singers who became legends of Rock and Roll met at a recording studio in Memphis, Tennessee, and did an impromptu jam session. Now Broadway has recaptured that historic moment in a show called the “Million Dollar Quartet,” and its touring version came to Portland’s Keller Auditorium on Tuesday, May 22nd to deliver a foot-stomping performance. There’s nothing like watching the high-energy of a Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley, and Johnny Cash on stage, especially when they are re-created by top notch impersonator/actors/musicians. With his arms and legs akimbo and a keyboard style to match, Martin Kaye embodied the antics of Jerry Lee Lewis to a T. Lee Ferris had the voice and exact playing style of Carl Perkins – always kicking his legs out (allowing him to show off his blue suede shoes). Cody Slaughter nailed the charming suaveness of Elvis Presley – complete with hip thrusting moves. Derek Keeling sang in the exact same voice as Johnny Cash, but with a range that went even further into the basement.

Rosie Recap - Chris Matthews & "Million Dollar Quartet" on "The Rosie Show"

December 8, 2011

INDIANAPOLIS, IN: Everything seemed to be lining up on "The Rosie Show". Her smile was infectious, she matched the glowing neon (and not in the bad way) and I melted into my sofa and relaxed. It didn't take long for Rosie to address the craziness that occurred within the last 24 hours. The night before, Ro had mentioned off air that she was engaged and the news spread like fire. So of course she had to address it…and she did. It has to be hard to have your personal life so public. It's great – we need more love in this world.

Theatre review: Million Dollar Quartet

November 22, 2011

Based on an impromptu jam session that took place at Sun Records Studio on December 4, 1956 with iconic musicians Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash, Million Dollar Quartet is a jukebox musical that vividly brings this unlikely collision of stars. More than anything the musical is an homage to Sam Phillips, the man who discovered all four men who would shape American music for so long. The production lets the audience witness this playful, sometimes combative, always fascinating meeting of these demi-gods of music.

Million Dollar Quartet Hits Shea's Through Sunday – Cast Interview

November 09, 2011

The “Million Dollar Quartet” is arguably the greatest and shortest-lived supergroup in the history of music. An impromptu jam session on December 4th, 1956, at Sun Record Studios in Memphis between Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Elvis Presley, the group cut a bunch of songs for fun – whether or not Cash even performed is in doubt – and perhaps most importantly to history, Sun owner Sam Phillips seized the opportunity for some publicity and called the press over to capture what will forever stand as one of the most iconic photos in music. Taken by Leo Soroca, the photo is in fact much more famous than the recordings.

Theatre review: Million Dollar Quartet tour at The Benedum-Sunday 6th November 2011

November 4, 2011

There was a time when southern white guys were learning to perform rhythm and blues, harking to black singers, soul singers, and down home back country guitarists. And out of those fundamental sources, those white guys began making names for themselves bringing forth music and words that sounded like the sources even if it was their own new stuff. And, lord a mighty, out of those roots, rock and roll was born, surging forth, stirring crowds, bringing many of those newcomers fame and fortune.

A MILLION DOLLAR JAM SESSION

September 29, 2011

The story of rock and roll is often reduced to a happy mix of rhythm and blues and country music, but it is actually a far richer and more complicated comingling of styles, genres, instruments, cultures and people. For our Rock and Roll Night School last night, my colleagues and I researched a rather famous moment in rock and roll history featuring some of its greatest musicians playing together at an impromptu jam session at Sam Phillips’ Sun Studios in Memphis on December 4, 1956. Coined the “Million Dollar Quartet” by local journalist Bob Johnson who stopped by to chronicle the session, I was struck by the versatility of these legends and the diverse repertory they had in their wheelhouse.
